PRESS: Sberbank seeks 1% from each payment in rapid payment sys

MOSCOW, May 28 (PRIME) -- Russia’s biggest lender Sberbank is ready to join the central bank’s rapid payment system if it receives 1% from each payment, Kommersant business daily reported Tuesday citing sources.

“For each payment sent or received, the bank wants to receive 1% of its amount, in addition to the commission that the system itself will charge. This is lower than the bank now charges when transferring to third-party bank cards (1.5%), but higher than those social tariffs which the central bank was counting on,” one of the sources said.

The central bank launched its rapid payment system for banks in February, it includes the possibility of transferring money knowing only the phone number of a recipient. The system does not charge commissions so far, but starting from January 1, 2020, sending and receiving banks are expected to pay 0.5–3 rubles depending on the sum of transfer. These costs will be included into commissions for clients that will be set by banks.

The central bank said it was not ready to consider joining a bank to its rapid payment system on special conditions.
